Calculate How Much Recycled Aggregate Your Project Needs

Aggregate Material Calculator

Use the Mount Elliott Crushing material calculator to estimate the amount of recycled aggregate required for your construction project. Enter the length and width of the project area in feet, select the desired material depth in inches, and the calculator will estimate the total number of cubic yards needed.

Our aggregate calculator can help estimate material for road bases, parking lots, building pads, drainage systems, construction entrances, utility projects, grading, backfill, and commercial site development.

Choose from the four recycled aggregate products supplied by Mount Elliott Crushing:

  • 21AA Recycled Aggregate

  • 6A Recycled Aggregate

  • 1"×3" Recycled Aggregate

  • Concrete Sand

Calculator results are estimates only. Actual material requirements may vary based on compaction, site conditions, moisture, settlement, material density, and project specifications.

How to Use the Aggregate Calculator

1. Select Your Material

Choose the recycled aggregate you plan to use. Each product is intended for different construction applications.

2. Enter the Project Length

Measure the length of the area and enter the measurement in feet.

3. Enter the Project Width

Measure the width of the project area and enter the measurement in feet.

4. Enter the Material Depth

Enter the planned installation depth in inches. Always follow the project plans, engineering requirements, and applicable specifications.

5. Select an Overage Allowance

Adding extra material can help account for compaction, uneven grades, settlement, and minor measurement differences. The appropriate allowance depends on the project.

6. Review Your Estimated Quantity

The calculator will display the estimated cubic yards of material required. Contact Mount Elliott Crushing to convert your estimate into an order quantity and receive current pickup or delivery pricing.

Understanding the Calculation

The calculator determines cubic yards using the project’s length, width, and depth:

Length × Width × Depth ÷ 27 = Cubic Yards

Because the depth is entered in inches, the calculator first converts it into feet before calculating the total volume.

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. A cubic yard measures volume, not weight. The weight of recycled aggregate can vary depending on product size, moisture, compaction, and material composition.

Which Aggregate Material Should I Select?

21AA Recycled Aggregate

Select 21AA when your project requires a dense, compactable base for applications such as road base, parking lots, building pads, commercial driveways, foundations, and site development.

6A Recycled Aggregate

Select 6A for drainage, utility projects, stabilization, pipe bedding where specifications permit, and construction entrances.

1"×3" Recycled Aggregate

Select 1"×3" recycled aggregate for French drains, culverts, erosion control, large drainage applications, and heavy stabilization.

Concrete Sand

Select Concrete Sand for leveling, grading, trench backfill, utility backfill, construction fill, and other applications requiring a finer, workable material.

Material Calculator Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate cubic yards of aggregate?

Multiply the project length in feet by its width in feet. Multiply that result by the depth in feet, then divide by 27. The result is the approximate number of cubic yards required.

How many cubic feet are in one cubic yard?

One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet.

Should I order extra aggregate?

Many projects require additional material to account for compaction, settlement, uneven grades, and measurement variations. Consult your contractor, engineer, or the Mount Elliott Crushing team before ordering.

Is a cubic yard the same as a ton?

No. A cubic yard measures volume, while a ton measures weight. The number of tons per cubic yard varies by material, particle size, moisture, and compaction.

Can the calculator determine how many tons I need?

The calculator provides an estimated volume in cubic yards. Contact Mount Elliott Crushing with your selected product and calculated quantity so our team can help determine the appropriate order weight.

Does Mount Elliott Crushing deliver aggregate?

Mount Elliott Crushing provides recycled aggregate supply and delivery for qualifying construction projects throughout Detroit, Metro Detroit, and Southeast Michigan.
